CAR-T cell therapy

CAR-T cell therapy in China

China’s NMPA has approved 9 CAR-T products, including the world’s first approved CAR-T for a solid tumour: satri-cel, targeting CLDN18.2 in advanced gastric/GEJ cancer. Potentially shorter waits and transparent cost estimates can help you plan; the hospital confirms suitability and timing. [1] [6]

Plan for time in China

Typically 6–10 weeks in China, with changes possible after assessment or during treatment. The remote review takes place before travel.

Check visa requirements with the Chinese embassy. Arrange translation of records into Chinese, and plan for a family caregiver to accompany you. The hospital decides whether bridging treatment is needed and when you can travel home.

  1. Remote medical-records review
  2. Arrival and hospital evaluation
  3. Apheresis: collection of your T cells
  4. Manufacturing: about 2–4 weeks
  5. Preparation and CAR-T infusion
  6. About 4 weeks of monitoring, staying near the hospital

Questions before travelling

Are foreigners eligible?

Foreign patients may be assessed for self-pay treatment. The hospital decides eligibility. Commercial CAR-T products are prescription drugs used at certified hospitals, according to their approved indications.

Can I join a clinical trial?

It depends on the study protocol and the research team’s assessment. Many trials require long follow-up in China. A records review does not establish trial eligibility or secure a place.

Can follow-up happen at home?

After the approximately 4-week monitoring period, follow-up may be coordinated with your local haematologist, as the treating hospital advises. Travel clearance and a written follow-up plan should be agreed before departure.

Why don’t you promise outcomes?

Results vary with the disease, previous treatment and individual health. Only the treating physicians can discuss prognosis, benefits and risks for your case.
